C12-15 alkyl benzoate: a new cosmetic allergen?

Conflicts of interest: The authors declare no conflict of interests. mineral sunscreens was tolerated. A repeated open application test on his forearm with the sunscreen products had produced a skin reaction, even without specific sun exposure [however, the site had not been covered with ultraviolet (UV)-protective textile, so photo-allergy could not be excluded]. The patient remembered having had a skin eruption at the age of 9 years, but no association with any topical product applied could be established. In October 2013, patch testing was performed with the European baseline series, cosmetic and sunscreen series (Chemotechnique, Vellinge, Sweden), and the patient’s own products (deodorants and sunscreens tested ‘as is’). Readings were performed according to ICDRG guidelines after 2 and 4 days. However, the patient showed eczematous reactions at the sites of all patch test chambers, which made interpretation of the results

The conformation of the C=O bond in the title compound 2MP4MBA, C(15)H(14)O(2), is anti to the ortho-methyl group in the phen-oxy ring. The bond parameters in 2MP4MBA are similar to those in 3-methyl-phenyl 4-methyl-benzoate (3MP4MBA), 4-methyl-phenyl 4-methyl-benzoate (4MP4MBA) and other aryl benzoates. The dihedral angle between the two aromatic rings in 2MP4MBA is 73.04 (8)°.
